The 3 Main Merits of Leybold

Leybold is a specialist machinery trader that imports machinery directly from around the world and sells it to users in Japan.

We draw on over 100 years of experience to provide the ideal solutions for our customers.

The 3 Main Merits of Leybold

Smart Solutions

Providing machinery that meets our customers’ conditions is only a part of what we do. As a specialist trader of machine tools and industrial machines, we draw on extensive know-how and a vast network amassed over many years to provide business solutions with a big-picture view.

To offer a wide range of solutions, we not only consult with our customers about their needs, current issues, overall line process, processing methods and budget, but put ourselves in the customer’s shoes to figure out all the fine details that are needed to give the customer just what they’re looking for.

If the customer needs advice or answers about specification changes, or is unsure of any other points about our imported machinery, we can bring a representative from the overseas manufacturer to visit the customer’s premises and explain those points. After we receive the customer’s order, we accurately manage the schedule from ordering to delivery, including the customs procedures required for air or sea freight, to ensure that our products are delivered safely and carefully to the customer’s location of choice.

Smart Solutions

Extensive Network

Leybold’s outstanding machinery mainly comes from manufacturers in European countries such as Germany and Italy. Our partner manufacturers include machine tool manufacturers with a large share of the global market, manufacturers covering almost the whole of the fermented food facilities market and manufacturers who produce equipment for various pharmaceutical processes and tests. The diverse range of machinery produced by these companies allows us to meet all of our customers’ needs.

With years of experience in trading with a wide range of users in fields such as the food, pharmaceutical, electronic, semiconductor and automotive industries, Leybold places a strong focus on our relationships with users. We even visit some of our overseas users who are considering ordering machinery and other equipment, to assess their on-site needs. One of our key strengths lies in our extensive network that we have built through close trust relationships, not only with the manufacturers but with our users too.

Extensive Network

Specialist Knowledge

In addition to their wealth of knowledge about machine tools and industrial machines, Leybold’s sales team are specialists in a range of fields and industries. Staff with an expert knowledge of marketing matters such as industry trends and cases at other companies will act as a partner, providing thorough follow-up throughout the process. Our sales team will also answer any queries you may have about visits from overseas manufacturers, changes to basic specifications, deadline control, consultation on assembling multiple pieces of equipment into a line or troubleshooting and maintenance after purchasing the machinery.

We also regularly arrange tours, information exchange and technical seminars with our overseas manufacturers about their machine tools and industrial machines, and constantly have our ears to the ground in the industry to gain new information such as new manufacturers through sources such as trade fairs in various countries.

Our consultations include advice related to processing, such as the chemicals to be used when manufacturing products.

110 Years of Progress

The foundations of our story were laid when an entrepreneur named August Evers visited Japan in 1861. At that time, Japan’s feudal system was in its last years and the country was in upheaval. A movement to overthrow the feudal government was underway and foreigners were increasingly being ousted. That Evers dared to travel to Japan during such unrest shows just how ambitious he was, how willing he was to brave danger in pursuit of success. Later, Evers founded Simon, Evers & Co. GmbH, a trading company with offices in Hamburg, Yokohama and Kobe. In the spring of 1905, further development was entrusted to young engineer Ludwig Leybold, and our forerunner, L. Leybold Co. GmbH, was established in Yaesu-guchi, Tokyo.

Two years later, in 1907, Kurt Meissner became our second president. Under his leadership, we were trailblazers in Japan’s trading industry, and contributed greatly to the development of Japan’s industries. We grew continuously throughout the 1910s and 1920s, branching into fields such as the electrical, steel, fiber and paper industries. Our growth remained strong as Japan entered the 1930s, with Leybold entering the machine tool field and selling a succession of cutting-edge products, primarily from Germany, to major Japanese manufacturers. We also began supplying machinery to plants such as pharmaceutical, food, water treatment and chemical plants, carrying out engineering work that combined overseas know-how with Japanese production technology to bring about boundless growth for the company.

But these prosperous times as a bridge between Japan and Germany and a contributor to the rapid rise of industrial development could not last forever. Post-war political policies threatened our company’s operations and made it difficult for us to stay in business. But in 1954, determined not to turn off our lights, we regrouped and resumed business as Leybold Kiko Co., Ltd.

As Japan recovered from the war and we regained momentum as a company, we introduced a series of the latest German machinery and facilities for the heavy electric, shipbuilding and automotive industries to return to our former glory. We also began trading printing and packaging machinery, and forged close, strong industrial relations with Germany through licensing agreements between German and Japanese manufacturers. We expanded our product range, with a focus on cutting-edge technology such as electronics, ceramics and biotechnology, striving to achieve strong results amid economic turmoil such as the oil shock and appreciation of the yen. This was accompanied by another name changed to our current name of Leybold Co., Ltd. in 1980. Today, we are widely trusted by a large number of industries thanks to our long history. Our current products can be seen on this website.
